Understanding vehicle paperwork in Spain can be confusing so this article explains what the ‘Permiso de Circulación’ is, why you need one and where to get a replacement if you lose yours.
The ‘Permiso de Circulacion’ is the document that proves ownership of a vehicle. When buying a vehicle (either new or second hand) you’ll need to register the ownership with the DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico). Once you are registered as the owner, the DGT will issue the ‘Permiso de Circulacion’
The Permiso is a small green A5 size document which is folded in half and has the following categories and information inside:

All the categories are not always filled out, but when you receive your new permiso, it’s important to check that your personal and vehicle details are correct.
Your `Permiso de Circulación´ must be kept in the vehicle at all times so it can be produced if stopped by the police. If you lose your permiso, you’lll need to request a duplicate either at the DGT or you can request one at your local post office (Correos).
